BOISE STATE FOOTBALL: Broncos Explode Early Against Colorado State; Win Sets Up Critical Stretch Against Air Force, Fresno State And BYU

Boise State senior quarterback Brett Rypien tossed four touchdown passes, special teams scored twice, and the Broncos produced the first 35 points of the game en route to a 56-28 victory over Colorado State on Friday night at Albertsons Stadium.

Rypien, who is down to his final three regular season games at home, hit A.J. Richardson twice to start the scoring (13 and 35 yards). Rypien also threw two TD passes to Sean Modster (17 and 25), finishing 22-of-26 for 308 yards and no interceptions.

Kekaula Kaniho scored on a crazy 74-yard punt return on the final play of the first quarter after Avery Williams fumbled, and Williams added a 44-yard onside kick return in the fourth quarter. It was the Broncos’ first kickoff return for a TD since 2013 against San Diego State.

Running back Alexander Mattison (3 yards) and tight end Garrett Collingham (4) of Mountain View High added TD runs, though Boise State was held to 150 yards on the ground (4.1 yards per carry). Colorado State (3-5, 2-2 Mountain West) outgained Boise State 489-472.

Linebacker Riley Whimpey had nine tackles, STUD Curtis Weaver had 2.5 sacks, and Williams and Kaniho added interceptions as Boise State’s defense finished with three takeaways.

Boise State is 8-0 all-time against Colorado State, the only MW Mountain Division team to never beat the Broncos. Boise State has scored 40-plus points in six of the meetings.

Boise State’s 56 points are the most in a conference home game since scoring 63 against Idaho on Nov. 14, 2009 (WAC). … Rypien has 19 career 300-yard passing games, which puts him one back of the Mountain West’s all-time leader (BYU’s Max Hall, 20 between 2007-09). … It was Rypien’s second four-touchdown game this season (Sept. 1 at Troy). … His completion percentage of 84.6 (22-for-26) is 10th best in Boise State single-game history. … Rypien moved into second place in the Mountain West record book in attempts (1,430) and completions (914). He passed BYU’s John Beck (1,418; 2003-06) in attempts, and passed BYU’s Max Hall (903; 2007-09) in completions. … Rypien eclipsed 12,000 yards passing for his career, becoming the second quarterback in Mountain West history – and the second in school history (Kellen Moore, 14,667) – to accomplish the feat.
