BOISE – Boise State scored the only TD of the fourth quarter, Eric Sachse nailed a 28-yard field in goal in overtime, and Wyoming missed its 37-yard attempt, giving the No. 22-ranked Broncos a 20-17 victory over Wyoming on Saturday night at Albertsons Stadium.

Boise State, playing without starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier and starting running back Robert Mahone, won despite 285 yards of total offense. Ninety-two of those yards came on the opening drive when backup quarterback Chase Cord led the Broncos to a quick 7-0 lead.

Cord, a redshirt sophomore making his first career start at home, was 19-of-30 for 190 yards and a TD, wide receiver John Hightower led Boise State in rushing with 38 yards on two carries, and Khalil Shakir caught seven passes for 70 yards.

Boise State’s defense held Wyoming to 283 yards and seven second-half points, but failed to produce a takeaway.

Wyoming (6-3, 3-2) is 0-7 against the Broncos in Boise. Backup QB Tyler Vander Waal, who started Saturday, finished 15-of-23 for 160 yards and a 3-yard TD run.

Sachse had a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Shakir scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth to force overtime.

NOTES: Attendance was 33,018. … In his second career start, and first at home, redshirt sophomore quarterback Chase Cord was 6-for-6 for 66 yards with a 5-yard TD pass to senior Akilian Butler on the game’s opening drive. The drive covered a season-best 92 yards and 7:10 of game clock. … Boise State has scored TDs on its opening drive against Portland State, UNLV, Hawaii, BYU and Wyoming. … Redshirt junior STUD Curtis Weaver recorded sacks on back-to-back plays in the second quarter to raise his career total to 33, second all-time at Boise State (Erik Helgeson, 54.5 from 1987-90). Weaver’s 12.5 sacks in 2019 rank fifth in Broncos’ single-season history. … The OT game was Boise State’s first regular-season overtime game at home since a 69-67 win in four extra periods against Nevada on Oct, 14, 2007. … Boise State has won three games this season when behind entering the fourth quarter (first time since three-such wins in 1990. … The Broncos won for the fifth time this season when tied or trailing at halftime (most since five in 1989). … Beginning with the fourth quarter at BYU, Boise State has scored on its last 12 trips to the red zone (8 TD, 4 FG). … The Broncos were 4-for-4 Saturday (2 TD, 2 FG), including the game-winning 28-yard field goal in overtime by redshirt senior Eric Sachse.
