They say that there are two types of football coaches: those who have been fired, and those who will be fired. There is a 52% chance San Diego State coach Rocky Long or Buffalo coach Jeff Quinn will be fired by the school they led to Saturday's Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The track record is not good. Not counting this years game, there have been 16 bowl games played on the blue turf at Bronco Stadium. Twenty-five different coaches have taken part in the game.
Here's a little history on the coaches who have been fired by the team they led to the bowl game (result of game/year in parenthesis) :

Dave Arslanian (L-1997) was co-coach of Utah State. He was fired after just two seasons as head coach.
Jeff Bower (L-1998) was fired by Southern Miss in 2007 after 17 seasons as head coach. He led the Golden Eagles to a 119-83-1 record and ten bowl games.
Gary Nord (L-2000) led UTEP to an 8-4 record in 2000, but went downhill from there. He was 6-30 his next three seasons and was fired in 2003. He was most recently offensive coordinator at Purdue.
Jack Bicknell (L-2001) led Louisiana Tech to the bowl game after a 7-5 season. He was fired in 2006. He is currently an offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chan Gailey (W-2003 L-2007) Led Georgia Tech to a bowl game in each of his six seasons but, the Humanitarian Bowl was his last. He was fired in 2007. He later went on to become head coach of the Buffalo Bills for three seasons.
Al Groh (L-2004) Coached Virginia for nine seasons posting a 59-54 record and was fired in 2009. He was most recently the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech but was fired in 2012.
Larry Coker ((W-2006) Led Miami to a National Championship in his first season and to the National Championship game his second season. The MPC Computers Bowl would be his last game for the Hurricanes after a record of 60-15 in six seasons. He is currently the head coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Ralph Friedgen (W-2008) a two-time ACC coach of the year led Maryland to a 75-50 record over 10 seasons. He was fired in 2010, despite a 9-4 record.
Robb Akey (W-2009) led the Idaho Vandals to a Humanitarian Bowl win during his 3rd season. After that Akey was 9-24 and was fired midway through the 2012 season.
The coaches fired at their next school after coaching in the Boise-based bowl game include: Chris Tormey of Idaho (W-1998) was fired by Nevada. Dirk Koetter of Boise State (W-1999/2000) was fired by Arizona State.
Steve Kragthorpe of Tulsa (L-2003) was fired by Louisville. Tom O'Brien of Boston College (W-2005) was fired by North Carolina State. Dan Hawkins of Boise State (W-2002 L-2005) was fired at Colorado.
John L. Smith lost with Utah state in 1997 and with Louisville in 1999. He was fired by Michigan State.
The unscathed for now: Nevada coach Chris Ault (L-2006 and 2008) retired in 2012 and is a consultant with the Kansas City Chiefs. Gary Anderson of Utah State (L-2011 W-2012) is now the head coach at Wisconsin. Frank Solich (W-2011) is still the head coach at Ohio University. Matt Campbell (L-2012) is still the head coach at Toledo. Dave Clawson (L-2009) with Bowling Green, is now head coach at Wake Forest University. Tom Matukewicz was the interim coach for Northern Illinois (W-2010) and is now the head coach at Southeast Missouri State University.
If you are keeping track, 72% of the coaches have been fired since playing in the bowl game. So, who is next? Flip a coin. Your odds of guessing are pretty good.
