It was an ugly thing to watch!

Boise State’s loss to New Mexico on Saturday might be the very definition of frustrating. For fans who sat through a game that started on a Saturday and ended on a Sunday. And, for the players and coaches who endured a rare loss at Albertsons Stadium.

It was difficult to watch Bronco receivers drop pass after pass. The Broncos first drive was a sign of things to come. Shane Williams-Rhodes dropped a sure touchdown pass. On the next play Brett Rypien was intercepted on another ball that should have been caught at the 3-yard line. Boise State amassed 181 yards in the first quarter and had zero points to show. All of Rypien’s interceptions were the result of missed catches.

It was frustrating that most of Rypien’s deep passes land just out of reach of his receivers. I thought the wind might have had some effect, but it didn’t seem to bother New Mexico on their long throws.

I would have liked to see Boise State offensive players try to take the ball up field. Too many times I thought they would try to run east/west or juke and jive for extra yardage. Most of the time it did not work. Give credit to New Mexico. They did a good job of pursuing the ball and making good tackles.

It is inexcusable that officials couldn’t get the review call correct on Jhurrell Pressley’s 74-yard touchdown run. In stadium replays showed he clearly stepped out of bounds near the 21 yard line during the run. I assume they weren’t allowed use of that video because it didn’t come from ESPN. Shouldn’t replay officials be allowed to use any and all video?

It was frustrating how New Mexico’s wide receivers were able to get behind Boise State’s defensive backs for long gains. The Lobos averaged over 24 yards per completion, nearly double that of the Broncos.

In the end Boise State put up 638 yards on offense and only scored 24 points. The defense got burned on a number of big plays and the result was a loss. Let’s hope the Broncos get it figured out before they play Air Force! Or we might be in for another frustrating game to watch.
