RENO — Wide receiver John Hightower scored on a school-record 88-yard touchdown run and cornerback Tyler Horton scored his third touchdown of the season on a 99-yard interception return as Boise State overcame a slow and sloppy start to beat Nevada 31-27 on Saturday night. Quarterback Brett Rypien completed 28-of-38 passes for 299 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He tossed third-quarter touchdown passes to CT Thomas (36 yards) and A.J. Richardson (41). The game was tied 17-17 at halftime, after Boise State was called for nine penalties and 108 yards in the first two quarters. The Broncos didn’t commit any penalties in the second half, and secured the victory with a 17-play drive that covered 8-plus minutes in the fourth quarter. Boise State was 11-of-18 on third-down conversions, 2-of-3 on fourth-down conversions and outgained Nevada (3-4, 1-2) 506-386. After the game, Boise State coach Bryan Harsin confirmed that backup QB Chase Cord has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season. The remaining QBs on the roster are junior transfer Jaylon Henderson and true freshman Riley Smith.

Boise State’s win was its sixth straight over the Wolf Pack (and 16th in 17 meetings). … Brett Rypien, who hit eight receivers against Nevada, is one of only two quarterbacks in the country who has completed a pass to eight different receivers in every game this season (Washington State’s Gardner Minshew II has hit at least nine receivers each game). … Rypien moves into third place on the MW career list for pass attempts (1,405), passing BYU’s Max Hall (1,382; 2007-09) and Wyoming’s Casey Bramlet (1,378; 2000-03). … Rypien also passed BYU’s John Beck (885; 2003-06) on the MW career completions (he now has 892). … Boise State tied its season-high with nine penalties for a season-high 108 yards. The previous season high was for 71 yards at Wyoming (Sept. 29). … John Hightower’s 88-yard TD run tied for the longest in school history with Jeremy McNichols’ 88-yard scoring run at San Jose State on Nov. 27, 2015. … Junior Isiah Moore (right guard) and freshman John Ojukwu (right tackle) played most of the second half. … Wide receiver A.J. Richardson caught his team-leading fourth touchdown pass, a 41-yard grab, while finishing the game with four catches for 79 yards. … Nose tackle Sonatane Lui’s fumble recovery in the first quarter was the third of his career, and first this season. … STUD Jabril Frazier forced a first-quarter fumble (which was recovered by Lui), and shared a sack, bringing his season sack total to 3.5. … Defensive end Durrant Miles shared a sack, increasing his team-leading total to 4.5.
