One of the most anticipated battles took place over the last few days. No, it wasn’t the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. I’m talking about the battle between the sun, and the new Boise Hawks blimp. The bleachers on the first base side at Memorial Stadium have always been sun-drenched. So the Hawks ownership ponied up the cash to have a blimp made in an effort to give fans some relief.
It’s an impressive looking blimp, announcing a game night at Memorial Stadium. It garnered local and national media attention, and got local people talking. The fact that people were talking about the blimp and not the team is a different story. Unfortunately, the early reviews are that the blimp didn’t work as planned. Friday night’s attempt led to this classic headline in the Idaho Statesman:
During Sunday’s game the blimp had to be taken down because of the wind. I don’t know if the Northwest League would allow the Hawks to fly the blimp closer to the first base side seats, or if that would even be possible. The Hawks may end up owning their own version of the “Spruce Goose.” (Howard Hughes airplane reference)
Whether or not the Hawks get their blimp/sun issues figured out, you have to give them credit for trying something different. In the meantime they could always buy a couple hundred of these to lend to fans in the first base bleachers…available at Amazon.com!
