Senate committee chairs are expected to brief their fellow Republican colleagues this Wednesday on some of the more controversial parts of the “big, beautiful bill” passed by the House, Politico reported on Monday.
This comes as GOP senators try to iron out some of the most difficult parts of President Donald Trump’s signature legislation.
Republicans held a similar meeting last week with committee heads, but that was to talk about the less contentious parts of the bill.
This time the senators are expected to be briefed by committee chairs who have not yet unveiled their portion of their party-line package of such contentious issues as tax cuts and extensions, border security investments and energy policy, according to Politico.
Senate Finance Chair Mike Crapo is hoping to be among the Republicans to update colleagues in his party on Wednesday on the GOP’s tax priorities, as well as alterations to Medicaid and potentially Medicare as well.
However, that meeting may be delayed as attempts continue to try and work out some of the sticking points, such as the cap on state and local tax deductions.
Similarly, Senate Agriculture Committee Chair John Boozman is also hoping to brief the conference on Wednesday.
However, he is facing pushback to a House proposal that would require states to cover part of the cost of federal food assistance benefits known as SNAP. In addition, the committee is finding it difficult to reach the $150 billion in net savings Senate Republican leaders are pushing for the agriculture part of the legislation.
The attempt to release written details of the plan to fellow Republicans in the Agriculture Committee on Wednesday is also looking more arduous as more governors in the past few days raised private issues with the cost-share proposals.
