Looking Back at Kap
Boise State fans have seen this Colin Kaepernick act before. Almost exactly. Kap, as Chris Ault called him, has been on our radar for a long time. Prater refreshed our memories about him on KTIK last week and I wanted to look a little further at the story from a Boise State perspective. Here is THIS about THAT.
Recruiting Kap
Here he is as at 190 lb with a 4.9 40 yard dash time as a high school kid. The only listed offer for him was from Nevada and by today’s standards it came late. Kap ran the wing T offense in high school at Pitman High School in Turlock, Ca between Modesto and Merced. He was described as a pocket passer who needed to gain weight to play at the next level. He was quoted as saying Boise State had called him in May of 2005 and he thought they were going to offer but BSU said they had to resolve a few issues first. He said Nevada told him he was their #1 guy. In the summer of 2005, he was without any offers and attended a 2 day camp at Boise State. He also checked out Nevada. He gave Nevada a verbal less then a month before signing day. Kap had a great baseball career going and several schools may have thought he would go with that before football. He told then he preferred football, not all believed him. The Cubs drafted him in the 43rd round the summer before his Senior year of college so he was serious about football after all. Boise State ended up only taking one QB in the Class of 2006 and it was Mike Coughlin, who committed in the summer of 2005. Seems to me, Boise State could have offered Kap but decided against it. They would pay for their mistakes.
Nevada
Kap made his first start ever in Bronco stadium as a red shirt freshman and torched BSU. He ran for 177 yards/2 TD and threw for 243 yards/3 TD. Boise State was 3rd in the country in points allowed at the time in defense. BSU won in 4 OT’s in a game Coach Pete described as the only time in his coaching career he thought it was a shame someone had to lose. By Kaps’ senior season he had filled out his 6’4″ frame to 225 lbs and was ready again to light up the vaunted BSU defense. Kap led Nevada to the historic 34-31 win by rushing for 45 yards and a TD and throwing for 260 and another touchdown.
49ers
Kap has filled out to 230 lbs of muscle now, can run a 4.53 40 yard dash and the book about his professional career is still being written. He set records for the NFL in post season play by running for a QB record 181 yards/2 tds and throwing for 263 yds/ 2 tds. SF beat Green Bay 45-31. His efforts looked similiar to that game back in Bronco stadium he had in 2007. Drop back, see man to man coverage, take off. Drop back, see soft zone, torch them threw the air. Painful memories for fans, and defenses never want to turn their back on the guy.
So here is a Tip of the cap to Kap.
