The 86th Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday night. It's time for my annual Oscar picks. I'm not a fan of having nine movies nominated for Best Picture. That is too many, and makes it difficult to see every one. Of the movies nominated, I have seen seven. Before my picks I have included a quick (no spoilers) review. For the record I was 3-3 last year in the major categories so to keep a true 50/50 from happening I have included a bonus pick.
Reviews
American Hustle: A good con movie that keeps you guessing until the end. A lot of funny moments.
Captain Phillips: At times an intense movie with Tom Hanks, one of the best actors of the last 20 years.
Nebraska: A dry humor movie. I wanted to like it more because it was partly filmed in Montana where I grew up. Will Forte is miscast.
Gravity: A lot of space stuff crashing and exploding. Great special effects. That's about it!
12 Years a Slave: One of those movies you aren't supposed to like because of the subject matter.
Dallas Buyers Club: Matthew McConaughey gives the best performance of his career as a not so likeable guy most of the time.
The Wolf of Wall Street: A bit too long. A typical Martin Scorsese movie in a good way.
Philomena: did not see it.
Her: did not see it
