The Boise State QB job is Ryan Finley’s to lose. Bryan Harsin made sure of that at the Spring Game. Nobody got more reps with the #1 offense then Finley. In fact, the only other QB who even took snaps with the #1 offense was Tommy Stuart. As long as Finley continues to improve and work at it, he looks like the best option.
If he is, that’s bad news for the rest of the QB’s.
History tells us that if Ryan Finley starts against Washington he will be a three year starter for Boise State. In 1997, Nate Sparks was the starter. He was a junior. Somewhere during that season, freshman Bart Hendricks took his job and never gave it up other than for injury and then got it right back. No Boise State QB has done it since. That’s a 17 year record. Unless Finley gets injured, or has an Air Force type game ala Grant Hedrick, he will take all the #1 snaps at QB the rest of his career. The rest of the QB’s playing time for the next 3 years will be mop up duty, spot starts due to injury and maybe a trick play here or there. That means Tommy Stuart will never start a game at Boise State. A career back up. Alex Ogle would have to wait for his opportunity until his senior year. Both Grant Hedrick and Taylor Tharpe did well with that. Brett Rypien would have 2 years to play once Findley graduated ala Joe Southwick or only 1 if Ogle gets the job. Unlike other positions, you don’t rotate in at QB. You may be the holder on FG’s and PAT’s but that’s it for special teams.
This is the biggest battle of their football career. Despite what we hear from coaches, if Finley gets the job, it is over. There will be no competition for 3 years. Winner takes all. NOW.
