Geno’s comments don’t add up

UConn Women’s basketball Coach Geno Auriemma took a shot at the men’s game on Wednesday calling it a joke. “I don’t coach it, I don’t play it, so I don’t understand all the ins and outs of it, but as a spectator…forget that I’m a coach…as a spectator, watching it, it’s a joke,” Auriemma said.

I am no college basketball expert, but I don’t see all the issues others seem to see. It’s far from being a joke! Sure, college basketball could use some changes, but you can say that about any sport. The NBA should enforce the traveling call. The NFL protects the skill players too much. College football’s overtime rule needs to be different. Major League baseball games are too long.

Auriemma said there are about ten teams in the top 25 that play the kind of basketball you like to watch. Maybe he should  take a closer look at the women’s game.

The average score of a UConn women’s game this season was 90-48. Maybe that’s the kind of game he wants to watch. Not me. Besides their one loss to Stanford, UConn’s closest game was with Notre Dame, another NCAA tournament number one seed. They won that game by 18 points. This season UConn  beat 12 of their opponents  by over 50 points.

It’s been said that the women have a better understanding of the fundamentals of basketball. There may be some truth to that statement, but “understanding” is not the same as “executing.” In full disclosure, I have only watched about a game and a half  of women’s basketball this year. Not all of it was bad, but what I saw had more than its share of turnovers, bad shots, and poor execution.

So Geno, if the men’s basketball game is a joke, what do you have to say about the teams you beat by an average of 42 points per game? Lets cue up your 87-24 win over Memphis and dissect that game!
