It occurred to me I should look back on my prediction of how I thought the Boise State Offense and Defense would play against Hawaii. We air it on Bronco Game Day (airs 5 hours before kick-off) and I spend quite a few hours studying the possibilities. We air it about 40 minutes into the show on 670 KBOI and Sports Radio 93.1 FM and 1350 AM The Ticket. Next Saturday against Colorado State you can catch it at about 12:40pm.
Boise St. Offense
The Hawaii defense was supposed to give Rypien a variety of looks. Not just stand there like Virginia. He passed this test Hawaii mixed up the looks to Rypien up front, blitzed a ton and he handled it well. Most of his long throws to me were decisions he made at the line of scrimmage because he was looking at his target and delivered. His pass protection was good in that Hawaii didn’t get any sacks but Rypien did get hit on a lot of blitzes. I thought Boise St had to run the ball well like Hawaii’s other opponents. They ran for 80 yards in the 1st quarter and another 87 in the 2nd. Mission Accomplished. I thought Boise State would have to execute a lot of plays because Hawaii’s defense was allowing 90 and 100 plays against them. Boise St had no turn overs and ran 48 plays in the first half. UNREAL. They did end up targeting #11 Nick Nelson and he gave up a long TD. I don’t thing Hawaii ended up taking away the Boise St dink and dunk passing game; it seemed to me they tried blitzing Rypien more. I thought they may have played that differently. I predicted Boise St. would score 31 points, they had more than that in the 2nd quarter.
Boise St. Defense
Hawaii was a 3 and out machine, had an average run game and had not protected Max Wittek that well. When the game was being contested, the first half, Hawaii went 1-10 on 3rd down, ran 16 xs for only 41 yards but only gave up a sack. I thought Boise St. would limit Hawaii scoring and get the ball back for Boise St. I didn’t see the 2 first half interceptions not shut out coming. I thought Hawaii would score 14 points. I missed it. WR Marcus Kemp didn’t start the game but did catch 5 balls. I thought he may be hurt. Pedroza was just as good at WR I thought but he disappointed with 0 catches. RB Paul Harris was average as advertised and only gained 14 yards.
