PROVO, Utah – The undefeated dream season is over.
Boise State fell behind by 18 points in the third quarter, and rallied with 15 points in the fourth, but the 13/14th-ranked Broncos fell to BYU 28-25 on Saturday night in Provo.
The loss to BYU (3-4) was Boise State’s first against a team with a losing record in 7,308 days (North Texas, Oct. 16, 1999).

Quarterback Chase Cord, starting in place of the injured Hank Bachmeier, threw for 185 yards and tossed two interceptions. Kicker Eric Sachse missed a 36-yard field goal midway through the third quarter.
BYU third-stringer Baylor Romney threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns in a battle of two quarterbacks making their first career starts.
“It’s pretty simple. We didn’t run it well enough, didn’t convert in the red zone well enough for touchdowns, didn’t win the turnover battle, didn’t stop them on short yardage,” Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. “There’s just some matter of facts in there that you go back and go it’s pretty simple.”
NOTES: Junior wide receiver CT Thomas’ 12-yard touchdown in the first quarter was the first rushing score of his Boise State career. He is the eighth Bronco to score on the ground this season. … Redshirt junior STUD Curtis Weaver registered a half sack in the second quarter to become third man in Boise State history with 30 or more career sacks (Erik Helgeson, 54.5, 1987-90; Chris Wing, 32.0, 1994-96). … The touchdown reception by junior wide receiver Octavius Evans in the fourth quarter was his first this season and third of his career (two in 2017). He recorded career highs in receptions (five) and receiving yards (77). … Cord hit redshirt senior tight end Garrett Collingham for a 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter to cut the BYU lead to 28-18. It was the first 2-point conversion for the Broncos since Matt Miller completed a pass to Jake Hardee on Sept. 20, 2013 at Fresno State. … Freshman running back George Holani set a career high with 109 total yards (97 rushing/12 receiving). … Cord finished 18-for-31 with a career-high 185 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
