THIS DAY IN SPORTS: The first of three for the amazing Allie O

Presented by BACON BOISE.

This Day In Sports…June 10, 2017:

After adding the event to her repertoire earlier in the spring, Boise State’s Allie Ostrander wins the national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene. Ostrander pulled away over the final 200 meters to win the race by five seconds. She became only the third woman and seventh track and field athlete overall to win an individual national championship for the Broncos.

Ostrander would win the title again in 2018, running away from the field once more, this time with a six-second victory. And Ostrander would go on to three-peat as a national champion in 2019, the first athlete in history to win three consecutive national championships in the women’s steeplechase. Ostrander was dominant in 97-degree heat at the NCAA Championships in Austin, TX, winning by more than seven seconds over Mountain West rival Charlotte Prouse of New Mexico. Her time of 9:37.73 was a personal best and a facility record. Ostrander then delivered one of the all-time best post-race quotes on ESPN2: “I feel so hot right now, and not like in the attractive way.”

Ostrander first made her mark with a runner-up finish at the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships a few months into her true freshman year at Boise State. She finished her career as the most-decorated student-athlete in school history. Ostrander also three-peated as the Mountain West’s all-sports Female Athlete of the Year—the only person, male or female, to win the award three times in conference history.

The Kenai, Alaska, native ended her career as a 13-time All-American and eight-time Mountain West champion. Ostrander still owns Boise State records in seven events: indoor mile, indoor 3,000-meters, indoor 5,000-meters, indoor distance medley relay, 3,000-meter steeplechase, outdoor 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters. As soon as she was eligible, Allie O was voted into the Boise State Athletic Hall of Fame last fall. Oh, and she became engaged in March.
