This Day In Sports…October 29, 2018:
With some of them popping over the head of former Boise State star Chandler Hutchison, Golden State’s Klay Thompson breaks the NBA single-game record with 14 three-pointers in the Warriors’ 149-124 win at Chicago. The previous mark of 13 had been held by teammate Stephen Curry. Thompson did it in less than 27 minutes of floor time over the first three quarters and exited the game with 52 points, going 18-for-29 from the field and 14-for-24 from deep.
Thompson’s first half was even more astonishing, as he connected on an NBA record 10 triples before halftime and put up 36 points. As a team, Golden State hit a record 17 three-pointers in the first and second quarters on the way to a staggering 92 points at the intermission. It was ironic, because Thompson had started the season ice cold from deep—he was 5-for-36 coming into the game. Two players have come within one three-pointer of Thompson’s single-game record since: Zach LaVine of the Bulls in 2019 and Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers in 2023.
Thompson and Curry were nicknamed the “Splash Brothers” while playing 13 seasons together on the Warriors from 2011-24. It was a Bay Area thing, with the name being coined as a nod to the Bash Brothers, Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco, who knocked the cover off the ball for the Oakland A’s in the late 1980s and 1990s. (Nobody ever accused Thompson and Curry of artificial enhancements, though). During their run with the Dubs, the Splash Brothers combined for 7,347 three-pointers and won four NBA championships. Curry’s now in the twilight of his career, while Thompson is suiting up for the Miami Heat.
Hutchison, the Broncos’ first-ever first-round draft pick, was in his sixth game with the Bulls. His NBA career never really took off, hampered by a serious shoulder injury suffered in late 2019. Hutchison hasn’t played in the NBA since a short stint with the Phoenix Suns that ended in early 2022. He then opened up about the mental toll that striving for perfection had taken on his life. But he hasn’t given up. Hutchison is signed to play this season with the Blazer’s G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix, who also play in Portland.
