My American athlete Mount Rushmore

Yes, although considered, I left people like Michael Jordan and Jackie Robinson off my Mount Rushmore of greatest American athletes. But, it's my list.

Babe Ruth: By accounts he partied like an animal, was larger than life and played for arguably the most "American" of all teams, the New York Yankees.

Jesse Owens: Won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics setting two world records, basically saying "Screw you Hitler!" It doesn't get any better than that.

Muhammad Ali: Brash and braggadocious, Ali (Cassius Clay) won the gold medal in the 1960 Olympics. He became the heavyweight champion and later he refused to join the army. In true American fashion, he was forgiven by the American people and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.

Cal Ripken Jr.: In my opinion Ripken single-handedly saved Major League Baseball in 1995 following the strike of the previous year. He showed up for work every day, did his job and stayed out of trouble. On the night he broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak, Ripken hit a home run.
