First of all, I hope everyone is having, or has had a wonderful Christmas. After broadcasting a couple of women’s basketball games earlier in the week, I’m back in South Jersey with my family for the holiday. The fact that I’m at home makes what I’m about to write about irreverent for me personally, but I thought it was noteworthy. As a football fan, I’m disappointed that Boise local market had the Panthers game (and the quest for an undefeated season) revoked to show Kellen Moore’s Cowboys game against the Bills.
I know we all love Kellen Moore in Boise, but this is at an irrational level. The Cowboys and the Bills have nothing to play for. The Cowboys have an awful record, yet have been on prime time every other week. And the Bills aren’t much more interesting. If this was earlier in the season, I’d have no issue choosing a game based on one player on a losing team. It’s too late for that.
We have one of the best NFL stories this decade right now, that can appeal to everyone. The Panthers are undefeated entering their 15th game. In the history of the league, only two teams have finished the regular season unbeaten, and only one of them remained that way through the Super Bowl. So, this is a historic type run. If they win, it’s a big national story. If they lose, it’s the NFL’s biggest story of the week.
Although I wasn’t in town for the Kellen era, I understand he means a lot to a lot of people in the area. But, the Cowboys aren’t our local team, he’s a local player. For those who like to follow individual players, there’s Red Zone, Fantasy Zone, and all the other tools people use to watch individuals. However, for the game of the week on the network, I sometimes wish we had more perspective than the hero-like Moore worship.
But again, I’ll be keeping an eye on Kellen Moore. But, as a sports fan, I can’t ignore what could potentially be the biggest NFL story this decade. Regardless, I hope he plays well, and I’m looking forward to talking about it with you on Monday.
