The golf gods are ruthless

Former Boise State golfer Troy Merritt had a pretty good weekend on the PGA tour. He placed third in the RBC Heritage tournament with a final score of 16 under par. Merritt earned $401,000. But, if there’s one thing I am sure of, I bet he would trade that money for the three strokes he needed to win the tournament. The problem is, the golf gods don’t take bribes!

On Friday Merritt tied the course record with a 10 under par 61. He entered the final two rounds with a four stroke lead that put him in position to win his first PGA event. However, nobody has ever won a tournament after two rounds.

Merritt slept on the lead Friday night. After his Saturday round, the lead was down to three strokes. I thought that if he could shoot a 68 on Sunday he would have his first PGA victory. I was wrong. Merritt finished with a two under par 69 and two strokes out of a playoff.

Every golfer needs a short memory. The golf gods can be ruthless! Some days all the putts go in, and others they don’t. Ask Jim Furyk who won the RBC Heritage. He had played 100 tournaments since his last victory.

I think Merritt will have other chances to win. He’s still young and from what I saw this week, he has a silky smooth swing. He has won tournaments at every level he has played, except the PGA tour. Sunday he had his best chance yet. The golf gods had other plans. It’s too bad they don’t take bribes!
