Why not the Vandals?

When I read the news release from Boise State announcing the additions of UTEP and Rice to upcoming football schedules a few thoughts came to mind. First, 2021 seems like a long time away and 2024 seems like an eternity. Secondly, the opponents didn’t spark any emotion until I was reminded it’s another potential four years without the BSU-Idaho game.

Long gone are the days of inter-office trash talking between Bronco and Vandal co-workers, hammers being planted on the opposing teams logo at midfield, fake punts when the score is out of hand, and 2-point conversions in overtime.
Boise State President Bob Kustra, and now Athletic Director Mark Coyle seem to have no intention to schedule the Idaho Vandals. And, that’s too bad. The people of this state deserve better. They deserve the Bronco-Vandal game.

I understand the argument that the Vandals will do nothing to help Boise State’s strength of schedule argument. However, neither will a home game against Idaho State. Or a two game series with Troy, whose record over the last 4 years is 17-31. So why not the Vandals? President Kustra has made it personal.

Leon Rice and Don Verlin have done their part to keep the Bronco-Vandal rivalry alive in basketball. Apparently basketball coaches have cooler heads when it comes to scheduling games.
